Week 10 - 7 April 2017

Kia ora e te Whānau o Whetūkairangi

Next week, being a short week, means that this will be the last 'full, jammed to the gunnels' Newsletter for the first term.

They say, time flies when you are having fun...... they also say, the older you get, the faster it goes (which I'm not so keen on!). We are looking forward to Grow Your Mind Day, Monday 10 April. Thanks so much in advance to all of you who have offered to come and share your passions and talents and provide an opportunity for our children to possibly experience something they haven't before. The timetable is looking really exciting, so varied!

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” (Brain Trace)

Along these same lines, Nicola has been looking into the growth mindset and girls' Maths research recently as our girls' National Standards data, in general, is not as high as our boys'. There is quite a bit of research out there!

She came across this interesting TED TALK which you may like to check out. "Jo Boaler explains why mathematics is so traumatic for many people and shows a different way that people can relate to Mathematics. She also shares the latest brain science to show the ways our brains process mathematics, the importance of visual learning and the importance of self belief to our learning".

Some of the senior students created this video.

It will be very interesting to see where this Maths Inquiry leads. So, it's clearly all about growing around here after all in the wise words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow."

Kia pai tō wā whakatā

Have a good holiday (when it comes!)

2017 Great Kiwi Science, English and Maths Competitions for Years 5-6

The University of Canterbury is offering your child the opportunity to participate in the Great KIWI English, Mathematics and Science competitions. These competitions take place annually and are designed by New Zealand teachers for New Zealand students based on the New Zealand curriculum. The competitions are administered by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) which is a not-for-profit Centre at the University of Canterbury.

The competitions are open to all Year 5-6 students in English, Mathematics and Science. Students can enter in one or more subjects. It provides teachers, parents and students with an independent, comprehensive record of a student’s performance. The supervised online tests will take place in the last 2 weeks of Term 2. The tests take 45 minutes to complete and each test consists of 40 short answer questions.

Register now
If your child would like to take part in the Kiwi Competitions, please register and pay via Wrap It Up by 9am on Tuesday 2nd May. The cost for a student to participate is $9.00 per competition entered. No late entries will be accepted.

Autahi Vets
For the last few weeks we have been exploring animals by playing vets. We have been taking good care of our class animals. Have a look at our Blog to find out more!

Autahi Explores Sound
We were very lucky to have lots of parents come in last week and share their musical skills with us and help us create our own music and instruments. What we did all week was pretty incredible!

Play Based Learning
We have had so much fun and used our creativity to make up games using the new play materials that parents have donated. Thank you parents! See some of the things we have created on our Blog.

Literacy Activities
We have been writing letters and posting them in our letter box this week. We learnt that you do have to put the name of the person you are sending it to on the envelope!

We thought it would be a nice opportunity to all connect and catch up over a drink or two at the Park Kitchen this Friday evening from 7pm. So come along, we had a great turn-out last time and everybody really enjoyed the evening! Look forward to seeing you there!

A Note from the Office

School Closures
Please note that school will be closed on Friday 2 June in addition to Monday 5 June for Queens Birthday Weekend.

School will also be closed on Friday 25 August for a mid-term break in Term 3.

Joining Worser Bay School
If you are in zone - we would love to hear from you if you have a child turning 5 in the second half of 2017, or early 2018, who would like to attend Worser Bay School. If you know of any other children living in zone who would like to come to Worser Bay School - we'd also like to hear from them too!

To check our geographical zone - see Joining our School.
Thank you.

Please park responsibly when dropping off your children to school. When cars are parked on both sides of Nevay Road at school drop off / pick up times, buses are unable to get through.

Warning -
Please do not use the Worser Bay School driveway as a drop off zone. There was a near miss involving a young child on the footpath at the bottom of the school driveway last year. The yellow lines are there for a reason!

Year 3-6 Miniball Registration for Term 2 2017

It’s that time again when we need to register our teams for Miniball for Term 2 2017.

If your child wishes to be part of a Worser Bay Miniball team, please sign up here.

For those of you new to the sport, Miniball is a modified version of basketball played on a smaller court with lower hoops and a smaller ball. There are two age grades: Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6. Each team needs a squad of 7 players, a referee and a parent coach/manager. Please indicate if you are able to assist.

Games are played at ASB Stadium Kilbirnie, between 4.00pm and 6.00pm and are 30 minutes long.
Years 3 & 4 play on Wednesdays and Years 5 & 6 play on Mondays.

Term 2 dates are as follows:
Years 3 & 4 - 10th May to 28th June (8 week league)
Years 5 & 6 - 8th May to 26th June (7 week league) - no games on Queens Birthday (Monday 5th June)

Practices tba. The cost will be approx. $40 (depending on the number of players).

Please ensure that your child can commit for the whole term. Once your child is committed to a team, the expectation is for them to see out the duration of the term.

Please Note: Registrations will close at 9am on Monday 10 April 2017.

Swimming - Term 2

Next term, the main focus for the PE curriculum is swimming. This involves every student having one weekly swimming lesson at the Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre for between eight and ten weeks. Because of numbers, students may be heading to the pools with different teachers from usual - more information to follow next week. Lessons, times and costs are as follows:

Years 1 & 2
Thursdays - 1pm to 2pm - 4 May to 6 July - 10 lessons - $75.00
Teachers - Gillian, Shona and Susie
Buses leave school at 12.30pm from WBS and 2.20pm from the Aquatic Centre.

Years 3 & 4
Fridays - 10am to 11am - 5 May to 7 July - 9 lessons (exclusion on 2 June) - $67.50
Teachers - Scott, Wanwan, Anna and Gabrielle
Buses leave school at 9.30am from WBS and 11.20pm from the Aquatic Centre.

Years 5 & 6
Fridays  - 12noon to 1pm- 5 May to 7 July - 8 lessons (exclusions on 2 and 16 June) - $60.00
Teachers - Nicola and John
Buses leave at 11.30am from WBS and 1.20pm from the Aquatic Centre.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s base group teacher.

Please pay and give permission via Wrap It Up by Tuesday 2nd May 2017.

Situations Vacant!
Are you calm, confident, proactive and enterprising?

Are you able to commit to spending some time supporting teachers to help with child supervision and changing at the pools?

The faster we get the children organised and ready, the quicker they get into the pool, meaning they make the most of their scheduled swimming time. (Even though we are keen to develop self management, changing rooms can have a strange effect on timeliness!)

If you think that you would be able to help to make the swimming experience fun and efficient, please let your child’s teacher know by Tuesday 2nd May 2017. Even if you can select some days that you would be available over the term, the teachers can schedule you in.

Pizza Lunch

On Wednesday 12th April, small individual pizzas will be available for lunch. All pizzas have a tomato sauce base and you can choose from three types of topping:
  • Cheese
  • Cheese and Ham
  • Cheese and Salami
Pizzas cost $5 each. Please order via Wrap It Up. Orders are due by 9am on Tuesday 11th April (no later).

The pizzas will be handed out by area (Autahi, Tautoru and Mahutonga/Matariki), therefore it is important that you order under each child's name separately (if you are ordering for two or more children).

Binary Numbers
What are Binary Numbers? Find out in this Blog post by Alex P and Leola. We have also been thinking about growing our minds in Maths. Here is a movie that some of us have made: The Yeti Monster

Also check out Growth Mindset Splat. We know that people are not born with a Maths brain and that when we challenge ourselves, our brains grow. In Jo Boaler's Ted Talk, "Believe in your Maths Potential" she says that it is important to see Maths visually. People visualise Maths in different ways.

Camp Memoirs
In Matariki, we have been writing memoirs about a time at camp. These are ‘moment in time’ pieces of writing where we are trying to SHOW you what happened rather than TELL you what happened. Check some of them out on our Blog!

Zealandia’s New Bird Game
Darren from Zealandia came in to talk to us about trapping and the new board game "Zealandia" that he is designing and has asked us to help with. Watch this space to see some of our card designs. Next week we’ll get a chance to play the game.

You can see some of our designs on the Blog.
