Kia ora e te Whānau o Whetūkairangi

Today we had our Positive Education Character Strengths Day. Character Strengths are a foundation of our wellbeing programme and they don't stop there! You will often hear them referred to when we are talking about 'academic learning' and also social learning, being part of a team, on the Miniball court, working with buddies, building resilience when things don't go your way...... the list is endless! 

You will hear them referred to in many written reports about progress and achievement, on Seesaw, on Blogs and in Newsletter pieces, in Assembly and Student Led Conferences. Soon all children will have created an "I am Powerful Plan". This plan will be what the child, teachers and, also hopefully, yourselves can refer to when they need some help to get over a hump. The more small humps they can learn to get over at primary, the better prepared they will be to get over the bigger humps, twists and turns (and wonders!) that life brings.
How wonderful it has also been to have some of you also opt to take the Character Strengths Online Assessment. How exciting it is when you talk to me about how you are deliberately using your strengths in the workplace or even leading sessions with teams around their character strengths.

For the past couple of years I have been asking potential employees to complete these assessments and come to interviews ready to discuss - always really interesting! As a staff, we refer to our strengths a lot and plan for ways to utilise them. Likewise, Board members strengths are recognised and referred to.

Go on - if you haven't given it a shot yet, you may be more curious now. This is the only free psychometrically valid, online test measuring the 24 Character Strengths https://www.viacharacter.org/Survey/Account/Register.

Please find a snapshot, taken from Ryan Niemiec's new book, quoted as the GO-TO book for building character, about why these signature strengths are important.

"The case can quickly be made for the significance of signature strengths from not only the science that has emerged over the last couple of decades but also from the perspective of the problem of chronic disengagement across organisations, relationships, and individuals.

Disengagement of individuals - A lack of flourishing
Less than 25% of the US population is flourishing and similar results found in New Zealand (Hone, Jarden, Duncan and Schofield, 2015)
This means people aren't functioning at a high level of wellbeing socially or psychologically
Support for strengths
Studies found that people who use their strengths a lot are over 18 more times likely to flourish than those who do not.
Each of the core elements of flourishing - positive emotions, engagement, meaning, positive relationships and achievement (Seligman, 2011) are significantly linked to character strengths.

Disengagement of individuals - A general unawareness of strengths
Survey research has shown that 2/3 of people are unaware of their strengths. (Linley, 2008)
Support for strengths
A representative sample of New Zealand workers found that those who were highly aware of their strengths were nine times more likely to be flourishing than those who were unaware (Hone et. al, 2015)
Character strengths have been connected to engagement in numerous studies.

Similar patterns in personal relationships and disengagement of employees.

Signature strengths are emerging across domains as not only as an important source of engagement but also as a central pathway...."

Stranger Danger Reminder

In the last week, there have been a few instances of children around Wellington being approached by an adult they did not know in a manner that is concerning. Apparently 2 of these have been in the Eastern Suburbs. PLEASE remind your child/children about how to be safe when they are not with you. 

Possible examples: 

Teach Them What “Stranger” Means
In essence, children should be reminded that they should not talk to people they do not know, unless it is someone they trust, or there is a trusted adult with them. Children should know that adults who are strangers, don’t usually ask children for help - so if they are not with a trusted adult, they should not comply. 

There are Lots of ‘Trusted/Friendly’ People in Our Community
Explain to your child that there are lots of safe people in our community. Remind them to trust their instincts. If they don’t have a good feeling about a certain person (any person at all, even the someone that they would think should be trusted), they should approach someone else or chat to a parent. 

What To Do
The most important thing to explain to your child is circumstances in which a stranger may approach them in a negative way. Explain to your child that if a stranger ever approaches and offers a ride or treats (like lollies or toys) or asks for help with a task (like helping find a lost dog), they should step away, yell “No!” and leave the area immediately. Your child should tell you or another trusted adult what happened. 

Know The Route
If your children walk to and from school by themselves, ensure they know the way to go and point out “safe” areas. For example, houses of people you know. Tell them to keep to main roads (if necessary) and stay in well-lit areas. Ensure your child isn’t walking alone (unless necessary) – having a walking buddy can be a great way to do this. 

Trust Your Instinct
Telling your children to trust their instinct is huge. If something doesn’t feel right, then they should go with that feeling. 

Talk to Your Child in an Age Appropriate Way
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself or on your children to understand the concept of “don’t talk to strangers”. How you will address this with a 5-year-old will be very different to a 13-year-old.

Worser Bay School Ceilidh - Saturday 9 June - Limited Number of Tickets!

It's that time of year again when we have our annual tradition for the Worser Bay School and the WIDER community - our Ceilidh.

Tickets are now on sale via Online Payments - so get purchasing - invite your friends to come along and book your babysitter! Ticket numbers are limited, so get in quick!

For those of you who don't know, a Ceilidh is a social event with Scottish folk music and traditional dancing. The band will lead us though the dances and there will be folk there who have danced before, so if you have never been to a Ceilidh before, now is your chance. It's the best fun you can have with tartan on!

Progress Meetings

Please book your Progress Meetings with your child's base group teacher if you are parents in Tautoru or Mahutonga/Matariki.

If your child is in Autahi there is a different schedule - watch this space!

Last term teachers met with you and your child to discuss how the year had started and set some specific goals looking ahead. This term it's an opportunity for parents to meet with the base group teacher (without children present) to learn more about 'whole child' progress to date, including progress against the NZ Curriculum levels in Reading, Writing and Maths. At this time, you will also receive a written report. 

Next term it's Student Led Conference time and then the Final Reporting Meeting/written report (again without children) occurs in Term 4. 

At the end of these upcoming meetings teachers will be asking you a couple of quick questions around reporting. With the demise of National Standards it now means that schools have more freedom in what is reported. Whilst the Government is doing more work around this, we have pretty much stuck with the status quo for now but see this first meeting as a great time to start the conversation about what matters most. Of course you will have a variety of opinions and we will throw them all in the mix during this year, see what legislation may come our way and go from there. 

These Progress Meetings are to be held from Tuesday 5 June until 15 June.

Prevent the Spread of Common Winter Illnesses
With winter approaching, take a look at the Ministry of Health’s website for information about how you can prevent the spread of common winter illnesses such as flu and colds at our school.

School Driveway
Please do not use the bottom of the school driveway as a drop off zone. The yellow lines are there for a reason. We have had a couple of reports of near misses on the crossing due to cars pulling in and stopping there. Please help keep our children safe.

Board Shorts

“Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi - with your basket and my basket the people will live”

This is something that is integral to our way of doing things – it refers to co-operation and the combination of resources to get ahead and is something both the Board and Teaching group are very conscious of as we consider the many challenges and opportunities we face. When I say the Teaching group, this encompasses a wide range of people, and while it obviously includes Jude and the Teachers themselves, they are wonderfully supported by the Teacher Aides and Office/Admin team who do so much to enable the smooth running of the school - no mean feat!

Winter is slowly but surely approaching with a little more frequency of rain and a cooling of temperatures. This isn’t, however, slowing down any of the activity, energy or effort on display by our Teaching group, parent support or students. That enthusiasm is one of the special things about our school and is one of those things that makes our focus on celebrating individuals and empowering all children to achieve success all the more rewarding.

As we enter the middle part of the year, there are a range of activities underway that are preparing us for the future, some of which you will be seeing the outputs of very shortly, such as the Progress Meetings, and others where we ask for your input and involvement to ensure a successful event in later months, such as the Fair. On the first point, you will shortly be attending your child’s Progress Meetings and will see some changes in the way we report on your child’s progress. Our teaching team are continuously working on ways to better inform and update you on how progress is being made and the effort involved across the wider teaching team is extensive – as Jude has said previously “it takes a village to raise a child”, well, it takes a whole teaching team to complete a Progress Report! The end result provides an assuring level of detail and is something you should look forward to.

While the Fair is one of the bigger and more obvious examples, there are numerous ways in which you can get involved (and a number are) in school activities and contribute towards your child’s experience at school. It's not all one-way however, as, while any contributions are valued and make a difference to the school, it’s also something where we regularly see that the parent or whānau involved finds rewarding and gets plenty of satisfaction and enjoyment. So, the Board would encourage you to look for opportunities to get involved and are always ready to discuss ideas and thoughts on what can be done and what you will get out of it.

As we know, all work and no play makes for a tough time. This is where the Ceilidh comes in and is a real chance to let your hair down, enjoy the company of the WBS wider community and dance outrageously (but safely) in numbers! For those of you who don't know, a Ceilidh is a social event with Scottish folk music and traditional dancing. The band will lead us though the dances and there will be folk there who have danced before, so if you have never been to a Ceilidh before, now is your chance. It's the best fun you can have with tartan on! There are more details elsewhere in the Newsletter but in short it’s on Saturday 9th June and ticket numbers are limited, so get in quick.

The Board


Traditionally, Māori believe there is a deep kinship between humans and the natural world. This connection is expressed through kaitiakitanga – a way of managing the environment.

This term, as part of our Inquiry about the environment, we have been looking at becoming kaitiaki/superheroes of our environment. Check out the Blog to see more of what we are inquiring about.

Discovery and Working together
Discovery time is a part of the learning that goes on in Autahi. We practice lots of skills like relating to others and contributing our own ideas. There are lots of things for us to try together as a team, like building an epic marble run. Take a look at our Blog to see more of the awesome things we do during Discovery time.


Kahoot It!
The Year 3 and 4 students have been working together in teams to review and strengthen their Te Reo. It has been a great opportunity for the two Year groups to work together and learn from one another. Kahoot is an online game platform that allows users to compete against each other to answer a number of questions developed by the teacher.

The students are super excited to play and we are hearing them use Te Reo in an organic ‘real life’ context. Check out the Blog for further videos and photos of the students in action.

This week we have introduced a new element to the Tautoru mix: music. The students work in base groups and rotate through four different musical activities. We have drumming, singing, rākau sticks, and music inspired art. There was a lot of excitement on Monday and luckily the weather was kind to us and we were able to head outside to make joyous noise.


Taking Action: Prototypes
On Friday, we started our prototypes for the inventions we are making. We are designing products or inventions that can be used to help protect our Forests. We have bird feeders, cat collars, waste disposers and so many more!

Taking Action: Improving our Designs
On Wednesday we had another day to make and create. We have had a chance to reflect on our prototypes and today we had a go at improving our ideas. 

We are taking action! We know that we need to help our forests and our environment. We can make big changes because "we are powerful!"
