Parent Workshop - Positive Education / Wellbeing - March 2024
On Wednesday 13 March 2024, we held a Parent Workshop on Positive Education / Wellbeing. Positive Education is in the 'foundations' of the school and you will see and hear and, hopefully, feel it when you spend time there. It's woven through our curriculum - stand alone and integrated, it's in our written reporting practices, school goals, you name it - maybe it's at the stage where it almost floats in the atmosphere?
Our teachers took time in the Christmas break to build a number of short workshops for you - based on the Science of Wellbeing and how this looks for your child in the classroom. These are always interesting, and parents have commented on the sessions being really worthwhile venturing out for.
This year, the workshop was about the what, the why and the how.... followed by 3 areas of exploration with the teachers:
Train your brain towards Optimism
Nurturing Resilience
Getting into the flow, engaging learners.
Hey, and what is good for the children is good for all of us!

Replies to Your Questions from the Pos Ed Workshop - March 2025
Do you do anything across the years where the students help less fortunate communities and within our own communities?
We build children's sense of belonging and community by connecting with ECE and community organisations. Our approach is very much linked to our Inquiry foci so this looks different for different ages and stages. Our intention is to build connections to our local community. Sometimes this has been sharing our learning with local ECEs and places like our local rest homes. We want our kids to feel empowered to take action in many ways. We refer to this as Positive Purpose. This is part of the Flourish Model.
How do you go about balancing empathy and care for others with care for oneself?
In order to take care of others we teach kids how to look after themselves socially and emotionally first. This includes building their awareness of self and is very much related to our Character Strengths. We empower kids to understand their strengths and what these look and sound like when overused. For example, we look to balance Empathy with the character strength of Judgement. We engage children in activities that promote perspective-taking and understanding emotions.
What language do we use with the blue and yellow zones of Regulation?
Blue Zone: This zone represents low energy and feeling down. It is used to describe emotions like feeling sad, tired, bored, or sick.
The Yellow Zone represents heightened emotions that aren't out of control but are starting to escalate. This zone includes feelings like frustration, worry, excitement, or nervousness. Children in the Yellow Zone may feel like they are starting to lose control but can still manage their behaviour with strategies.
Here are some examples of the specific language (Emotional Coaching) we use:
"I see you're feeling ............., and it's okay to feel that way. Let's........... and work through it together.
"It’s okay to feel .............. right now. Let’s take a break, and then we can figure out how to get back to green."
"I can see you are in your yellow zone because.................? How can I help you? What do you need?"
"What character strength can you dial up or dial down to help you get ready for learning?"
"Get your fingers ready - lets do some 5 finger breathing together."
Feel free to come and see us for further information.
