Whenever I show new families around our school, almost 100% of the time they comment on the architecture and how they can see how the children learn so well within the 'arms' encircling the courtyard.
Redesigning the school back in the midst of the open hearts and open minds era, when schools increasingly promoted creativity and curiosity, also meant a more individualised approach. This included giving children a choice of where they would sit – would they go for a quiet space to work independently or choose the round table which encouraged greater collaboration and the like.
Whilst we know more now about the brain and how children learn, and are more concerned about screen time, posture and ergonomics in general, our architecture, which really does its job promoting a sense of community and belonging, reigns on the hill.
The design of the playground, for example, allows for more fluid interaction between classrooms and age groups, and the use of more natural materials also supports more of a friendly rather than institutional environment. Having the ability to create different types of zones within spaces also allows for a more child-centred approach, and when the architecture aligns with the vision and values, reinforces the desired culture and communicates it clearly, there is this sense of cohesion.
I think it is this that people feel when they come for their look around.
It is always a work in progress, and schools are constantly undergoing renovations. We had plumbing and 'things you can't see' happening over the break, like manholes and cables on the fix-up list. The junior toilets and the outside area at the intersection of the big kids and little kids playgrounds are next up. There is a list that appears to be lessening in size – and then not at all!
It is also this wonderful architecture that supports our community events so well. The different spaces, both inside and out, really do come alive.
If you are newer to the school and this is your first Worser Bay School Fair, you will see how the school's heart beats fully, how the people all work together to do their best for our children. You will also witness many pupils and their whānau from days past who return year after year at this time.
There is definitely this bond, connection, interconnectedness, togetherness... sense of cohesion that is palpable.
Thank you to our physical space for supporting great things to happen!
