Kia ora e te whānau
Our first full week back in the frontline!
I've been reflecting on the start of the school year. Every year takes on a slightly different flavour but the underlying aspects remain. Get the tone right. Get the expectations right. Get the dynamics right... it's like a giant strategy exercise!
Of course it's a bit more straightforward at our school as we are only greeting one new cohort into a space and it's a space they are already familiar with but it still take thoughtful execution!
The staff spent time together in the holidays and had 2 formal 'Staff Only Days' before the children came bouncing back. Over the days we set direction for team aspirations. For example in the office Steph and I are aiming to:
(Let us know how we are doing:) )
I had also given the staff a task to come ready to talk about something they had been thinking about over the break. This was a fascinating exercise as I had no idea where it would go and go it did! Not surprising maybe but there were a number of connections between most topics selected. I'd been thinking about team culture, parasympathetic systems and how to work through complexity and thrive. It's easy to dream big under canvas in January!
We looked at topics for our Positive Education Parent Workshop - coming up on Wednesday 19 March at 6:30pm and pulled the material together and looked at more nitty gritty data and plans.
Coming back, we have been delving straight into using the new Maths and English Curriculum and planning for our School Inquiry 'Explorers of the World'. Staff too need to be explorers - researchers, finders, questioners and connectors. I always think if we are hoping for x for our children then the bigger and older ones in the school need to model it as best as possible.
So we need to continue the legacy of the great educational leader Sir Ken Robinson - The titles of his books "Finding your passion changes everything" "Out of Our MInds" " Creative Schools" " The Element" ...to name a few speak for themselves. So in the midst of everything I really hope our staff can keep their aspirations close, keep thinking about new ideas, channel their inner Sir Ken and help our children look up, look out, experiment, make mistakes, push themselves that bit more and let their strengths shine and passions unfold.
