The other day on road patrol I was being entertained (just the right amount) by the patrollers discussing a pile of characters and going into great detail about a book series I had no idea whatsoever about. They were clearly hooked and it provided them with many points of reference for a rather fanciful discussion. They were most decidedly bonding over their reading!
Our library remains one of the most loved spaces. We have books on rotation. There is always a lovely buzz - whether it be lunchtimes or part of the class programme. Our children experienced the joy of the City Library last week. What I love most about this space is how constantly busy it is. We got to look at spaces that are usually not seen by the public which was a real highlight - as well as the escalator for many! It was a terrific ‘quick’ exploration of a Wellington gem that’s been clearly missed!.
Of course libraries these days aren’t all about reading and they are places for so much more but there is still nothing like finding a great book that is almost unputdownable!
Last year the staff did a great little activity. We had to look through the library collection and pick a book that we thought a particular staff member would enjoy (after picking their name out of a hat!). It was fun - and I think we all did a pretty spot on job. It was also a way of making sure we were familiar with the whole collection at the time.
We also have excellent back up from the National Library Services with our orders being delivered and returned!
Reading data continues to be a strength. Whilst it is ideal that children get a good dose of being read to at home as they are coaxed into bedtime or a time that’s set aside for independent reading, I am a realist and know some days and in some weeks this may be more difficult than others.
I found this when I was looking up something else the other day and thought it may be of interest as an alternative or an addition:

Have a great weekend. Can’t believe we are nearly at the midpoint - it’s a long term - so with a growth mindset we aren’t there... YET!
