This week, your child led a discussion about their learning with you. Well, that's the aim and we know for some it can take a while to get to this point, so don't worry if not all of the boxes below were ticked, this time. Like many things, sometimes it takes lots of practice to build up the confidence for them to 'lead' the conversation but it will be worth it.

The purpose of conferencing (from the Ministry of Education)

The student is actively involved in the learning and reporting process.

Student-led Conferences and Three-way Conferences are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:

  • to help students demonstrate evidence of learning

  • to teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation

  • to facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence

  • to encourage students, parents and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue

  • to encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning

  • to increase parent understanding of their child’s learning through improving attendance at and satisfaction with the reporting process.

Next week, we must mē whītiki, tō whītiki / fasten our seatbelts for another big week. A grand finale, if you like. Two big nights of the Arts Celebration and seeing the term out on a social high at the Parents' Quiz Night down at Iron Horse, Miramar.

I think the staff need to rest up this weekend in preparation as they turn up the heat towards the lights dimming a little come next Friday!
