On Monday we had our Kāhui Ako Mathematics and Statistics Professional Learning Day. Due to the amount and pace of curriculum change the Government granted schools two days of learning so that we were in a slightly better position of knowing. This was particularly true for Mathematics as we were not originally anticipating having to implement this in 2025.
The great thing about having this day with 130 of us together meant that our teachers were able to participate in wider discussions, contribute and take away something new, perhaps, and at the same time realise that many of the questions these changes have bubbled to the surface are shared wonderings.
It was intense. The 2nd day we all have together is Friday 8 August. School is also closed on this day.
Teachers and support staff across our Kāhui learning together to continue to do their best with new material.
Although we have been working with the new curriculum material all year and feel well placed, it has come with many questions - especially as we know not all children are achieving at the same level and we need to ensure those needing more supports are getting just that, and those flying in Maths - are being challenged but also experiencing breadth and depth. It's not a race. You don't wish a child to be flying through content without exploring the outer limits of concepts in a variety of ways.
So - all this being said it was reassuring to have reinforced by the facilitators that 'teaching will not be replaced by robots anytime soon'. Our job is relational in spades, we focus on the social and emotional, the inclusivity and belonging, the building of mana and learning community. This is the science and the art of teaching. This message was loud and clear - a message that, if we don't have our senses at the ready, can be dampened too easily.
So thank you for finding a way to have your child at home with you on Monday and providing many teaching and support staff this opportunity.
