AWE
"Wonder is the beginning of wisdom." —Socrates
We often mention the word awe in our Positive Education work…. it’s a complex one! But, whilst a complex emotion to unpack, we feel it necessary be highlighted as part of our local curriculum, and it’s worth figuring out!
Teachers could just go online and find a series of lessons, they could ask AI for help - they could basically click and collect. The problem with this is, they wouldn’t be tailoring anything to the children in front of them with all of the experiences they bring with them or the rich environment we are situated in.
The art of teaching is based on Science, now that we know so much more about how brains work, and learning happens sprinkled with plenty of creativity and collaboration.
So, back to awe. For us, this is a constant challenge to find ways for children to experience awe, especially when they live in a fast past world full of many instants. We want to slow them down in many ways…….. notice and relish - take it in!
For we know that awe-inspiring moments have positive effects on children’s overall development and wellbeing, and it can also increase creativity, support a sense of humility and contribution - which can be tricky in terms of age and stage (as we know!)
The research is plentiful and compelling. Neuroscience really has brought a whole new dimension to teaching and learning that can’t be underestimated and an area to constantly delve into.
It’s not just a good emotion for children either:

We will keep finding ways to weave awe(some) opportunities into our weeks…….
Here’s to an ‘awe-filled’ weekend.
